How to Calculate a Percentage

The basic percentage formula is:

Percentage = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100

For example, if you want to know what percentage 25 is of 100, divide 25 by 100 and multiply the result by 100. The answer is 25%.

What Is X% of Y?

To calculate a percentage of a number, convert the percentage to a decimal and multiply it by the number.

20% of 500 = 0.20 × 500 = 100

You can use the first calculator above to perform this calculation instantly.

How to Calculate What Percentage One Number Is of Another

Divide the first number by the second number and multiply by 100.

50 is what percentage of 200?
(50 ÷ 200) × 100 = 25%

How to Calculate Percentage Increase

Percentage increase measures how much a value has increased compared with its original value.

Percentage Increase = ((New Value − Original Value) ÷ Original Value) × 100

For example, if a price increases from GH₵100 to GH₵125, the increase is GH₵25. Dividing GH₵25 by GH₵100 gives 25%, so the percentage increase is 25%.

How to Calculate Percentage Decrease

Percentage decrease measures how much a value has fallen compared with its original value.

Percentage Decrease = ((Original Value − New Value) ÷ Original Value) × 100

For example, if a price falls from GH₵200 to GH₵150, the decrease is GH₵50. GH₵50 divided by GH₵200 equals 25%, so the percentage decrease is 25%.

What Is Percentage Difference?

Percentage difference is commonly used to compare two values when neither value is necessarily considered the original or starting value.

Percentage Difference = |A − B| ÷ ((A + B) ÷ 2) × 100

This is different from percentage increase or decrease because the denominator is based on the average of the two values.

Where Are Percentages Used?

Percentages are used in everyday life, business, finance, education and shopping. Common examples include:

  • Calculating discounts during shopping.
  • Calculating tax and VAT.
  • Comparing salary increases.
  • Calculating loan interest.
  • Measuring investment returns.
  • Calculating exam scores.
  • Comparing business growth.
  • Calculating price increases and reductions.

Percentage Discount Example

Suppose a product costs GH₵500 and has a 20% discount. The discount is GH₵100, because 20% of GH₵500 equals GH₵100. The discounted price is therefore GH₵400.

Percentage vs Percentage Points

Percentage and percentage points are not always the same thing. If an interest rate increases from 10% to 15%, it increased by 5 percentage points. However, the relative percentage increase is 50%.

Understanding the difference is particularly important when comparing interest rates, financial statistics and other rates.

Why Use an Online Percentage Calculator?

An online percentage calculator saves time when working with multiple percentage calculations. Instead of manually applying the formulas, you can enter your values and receive the result immediately.
